Comic Review: Robyn Hood #2

Review: Robyn Hood #2 (Zenescope)
By: Erin DeBorba

When we last heard from Robyn, a mysterious, powerful woman, who was shot with an arrow not two minutes later, had just pulled her into the land of Myst. Soldiers surround them and she states her name for the first time.

Issue two opens with the soldiers still surrounding Robyn and her mysterious ally, which quickly becomes a fight between Robyn and the soldiers. After beating five of them down, and acquiring a bow and quiver of arrows, Robyn is wondering where in hell she is. All she wants to do is go home and see Cal King, the guy who’s car she stole, who beat her into a bloody pulp and threw her in jail, and give him a little payback.

Meanwhile, the mysterious woman now appears in the form of water, wishing to explain exactly what is going on to Robyn. Robyn, however, wants nothing to do with it. She already knows she’s different; she doesn’t care about the past, and just wants to move forward. Having heard the mention of people in need, and a King who is ruthless and brutal, Robyn agrees to help them. In return, she gets to go home. The mysterious woman then tells Robyn to take her Ruby, which grants Robyn the ability to see with her bow, like it’s a part of her.

Robyn makes her way towards the nearest village, without noticing that one of the guards had survived and got away. As she enters town, she sees things that remind her of her home, and of her past. After promising a poor villager that she’d be back with more money, Robyn comes across an official of some sort, arguing with a young girl. After gaining the gist of the story, Robyn pulls her bow on the official, steals his pouch of money, and helps the girl, and her sick mother, escape from the village after giving her some of the official’s money.

More soldiers appear, including the one that had gotten away from earlier, and he warns his soldiers not to fire against her out of fear that they will all die. After a warning from the soldiers that King John will come after her, Robyn says “Good,” takes the rest of the official’s money she had stolen, and gave it to the poor villager she had promised money to. In closing, the villager has his money and is very happy.

Issue 2 not only confirms that this story of Robyn Hood is going to be epic, but it confirms what I said in my issue 1 review, that Pat Shand and the Zenescope team have done some incredible work. The artistry and design is perfect, the character design is so in-tune with what a female Robyn Hood would be, and yes, she steals from the rich to give to the poor.

Look out for my Issue 3 review, coming soon!
