DMC Presents: ‘Last Sons Of America’ A Great Adoption Thriller

So there’s a problem in comics right now. There are too many good books out there and sometimes smaller books can get lost in the shuffle. One publisher that is putting out some really good stuff is BOOM! Studios. Last year BOOM! decided to cut back on the number of titles they were publishing to focus on delivering quality product. This is the direct opposite of what the majors are doing these days. Over the past few months BOOM! has put out some really solid mini-series that are right up there with the best TV dramas — Snow Blind, Venus, Last Contract, Welcome Back, Klaus and one of my favorites Last Sons of America.

In Last Sons of America writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Matthew Dow Smith tell the story of two brothers Jackie and Julian who are adoption agents working in Mexico. Adoption has become big business in South America after the United States has been rendered infertile by a chemical terrorist attack. The brothers work by the book to bring kids to the states but they run into trouble when Jackie decides to make a quick buck by kidnapping a child. Things get even worse when he kidnaps the child of the local drug lord. The brothers run into all sorts of problems as they try to flee the country with the girl.

The story has all kinds of crazy twists and turns and really delivers a lot of drama for a 4-issue mini series. The third issue, which is out this week, has a crazy twist at the end. Dow Smith’s art is dark and gritty. I could totally picture this story being adapted into other media either as a TV series or a movie. Hopefully the creators have more planned past the conclusion of the mini series because there is so much they could do with this world they have built!

So give BOOM! Studios a look the next time you’re at your local comic shop. They’re putting out some real quality stories that don’t require a long-term commitment!
