New York Comic Con 2015 Reporter’s Notebook

Before we start posting any galleries or videos from the 2015 edition of New York Comic Con I thought I would file some observations about the first day for those of you not able to attend (and not to bitter about that fact to want to read it).

Even if it is the country’s largest nerd convention, not even NYCC is worth getting on the road at 2:30 a.m. As a follow-up, if you use Google Now or Siri, make sure you use the clarifying phrase “24 hour” when you ask for a gas station near you on a nearly empty tank of gas at 4 in the morning.

Friday was loaded with amazing cosplayers and large crowds of attendees not in costume. However, the fact the Pepsi was giving out for free the commemorative “Pepsi Perfect” bottles from the movie Back to Future II to anyone dressed as someone from the movie series meant that the line for that display wrapped around the open atrium on the second floor, and there were more Marty McFlys than you could shake a hoverboard at.

I finally met Harley’s Joker! And his cosplay is even more amazing in person. Also, he is a very nice — and amazingly humble — person. Look forward to more photos of him in the first gallery when it goes up in a few days.

But first, let Seth Green take a selfie.

Getting a hug from Extreme Costumes‘ jaw-dropping Hulkbuster is a somewhat frightening  experience. But also very satisfying. Speaking of the Hulkbuster, he was among a group of Avengers — including The Covinator‘s Captain America, Mark Hyrullian‘s Thor and Planet Ruby‘s Hulk — that crashed the Robot Chicken panel, and even got in a selfie taken by Seth Green himself.

Not once, but twice I saw DC Comics’ Co-publisher Dan Didio himself just walking by the Starbucks casually on his way from one event to another. Apparently nobody else recognized him, or if they did, like me decided to not bother him.

Perhaps the most disturbing costume was the official one from the new 1990s-focused channel from Nickelodeon called The Splat. The full size yet cartoon accurate Tommy Pickles was a giant-headed baby with a diaper so big it could have been used by at least a dozen jilted former astronauts on a cross-country road trip to seek revenge on a former lover (look it up).
