After a slate of films that were, at times, great, here are the winners from Average Superstar Films  “A Night of Short Films VIII,” held Jan. 12 at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia. Luckily there were a number of films that seemed geared for the geeks in the crowd!

“Dig”—Whether or not you like horror, this tense 45-minute film from Frank Horror is a fascinating study of one woman’s psychological breakdown. It was one of the night’s few films that as you watched it made you forget it was not a big release out of Hollywood.

Seamless camerawork and excellent performances, especially by lead Aimee Cassada, as well as solid writing and sound work executed an intriguing theme. It is also a patient film that allows the scenes to build anticipation and dread. Oh, and an awesome and disturbing climax is just the cherry on top.

The only quibble I had was the background music seemed a bit loud and some scenes would have seemed to pair well with silence instead. Other than that, rest assured that you’re going to dig “Dug!”

“Living in 8 Bits”—This “Double Dragon” parody is pitch perfect for anyone who owned a Nintendo. It featured closely observed jokes and well-staged action. Everyone I talked to was excited to check out more webisodes from Mixed Nuts Productions, based on this incredibly entertaining short.

“The Death and Return of Superman”Think of Drunk History. Now add comics. Got it? Max Landis, son of John Landis (director of “Animal House”), and writer of “Chronicle” stars in this very funny comedy short that features appearances by Chris Hardwick, Elijah Wood, and Chloe Dykstra. This one felt like it needed a few editing tweaks yet, but a real crowd pleaser.

“M is for Martyr”—This film proves that you don’t have to know exactly what happened in order to find a movie delightfully horrific. Beautifully shot and acted, this creepy film burns itself into your mind like a branding iron.
