Free Comic Book Day 2025 At Double Midnight Comics
I missed Free Comic Book Day last year, due to seasonal allergies hitting harder than they had in some years. Which was a shame, since 2024 was one of the years when FCBD fell on May 4th, Star Wars Day. According to friends who did make it then, and the people at Double Midnight Comics in Manchester, NH, that meant last year was very well attended.
Alas, those numbers didn’t hold up for this year at DMC. Aside from the fact that this year the event was on May 3 and not connected to Star Wars Day, the weather definitely played a part in that attendance change. Predictions had bands of heavy rain working their way through the area all day, with a possibility of very heavy thunderstorms. While only one band of rain came through from opening until about 3 p.m., at that point the skies opened up and torrential downpours began. Because of that, the owners of DMC called the event at 4 p.m. instead of the scheduled 5 p.m.
Still, vendors and charity group managers I talked to said they did OK, if not bang-up business. And I had more opportunities to chat with friends I had seen recently at Wicked Comic Con or hadn’t seen in months or years. For my work, I had another space near the of the end large hallway event space at the former mill building that is DMC’s home since 2023, The Factory on Willow. This year though I was on the opposite side of the hall, which meant I was facing a blank, white-painted brick wall. Once I got set up, I realized that to get enough distance from the cosplayers, I had to be almost in the walkway, particularly because I needed to avoid getting a large white curtain that was tied to the wall out of the frame. Then I realized I could use the curtain as a backdrop and just rotate my setup by 90 degrees. Problem solved.
The gallery link photo below is of the cosplay contest winner in the Adult category, kaewhatever. The featured photo above is a recreation of something that just randomly happened as I was looking over toward the folks across the hall, the 501st New England Garrison. One cosplayer dressed as an Imperial officer walked up to the event bar, where purely by coincidence, three Rebel pilot cosplayers were talking to someone behind the bar. It looked just like what we recreated for the photo — some poor guy at a bar trying to get the bartender’s attention while people at the bar basically shut him out. It only took two attempts to get the right shot.
Cosplayers in this single gallery include Zombie Leader, lizardofdoomstudios, kaewhatever, rangerpoolcosplay, GiveWave Studios, and many more.
