You might have heard that for this year Nerd Caliber was the official Cosplay Photo and Video service partner of PAX East. After 15 years of taking thousands of cosplay photos and hundreds of videos at PAX East, as part of a greater focus on cosplay for the convention, they reached out to us back in January to see if we wanted to help them achieve that goal.

Needless to say, after much internal screaming in joy, we said yes. Months of negotiations later it became official, and we started promoting it relentlessly. One of the benefits of having the convention dates moved forward into May from its more common late winter or early spring dates is that allowed us to actually have time to do any promotion at all. Another was not having to worry about blizzards.

On Wednesday I set up a studio space in Room 106, near the back end of the west hall on the first floor. I had rented Westcott lighting gear from the wonderful folks at LensProToGo, and the only real screw up of the entire con happened that day — I tore a pinky nail-sized chunk of skin off my right ring finger setting up the c-stand bases for the light stands. I had plenty of bandages in my bag, so after a short interlude for cleaning and wrapping, everything went smoothly again.

Thursday was the first day of the convention and I had a rush of people right as the doors opened at 11. By the end of the day, I had taken more than 100 photos — much more than any other Thursday I’ve been at PAX East.

In fact, I took so many photos this past weekend that I am going to modify my gallery requirement, and over-stuff each gallery to keep the entire number of posts from running into three weeks. Expect each gallery to be like this one — more than 100 photos in size.
