Rhode Island Anime Con 2026 Part 3
By the time I took the photos of the Eri cosplayer in the Rhode Island Anime Con gallery linked below — about one-third through the photos — the rechargeable batteries in my new Godox TT600 flash were failing. So, instead of swapping them out, I replaced the flash completely with my go-to main flash, a Flashpoint Zoom Li-On R2.
The light output was significantly lower, despite the fact that both flashes have the same Guide Number of 60. It could be that I’ve been using the Flashpoint for so long that the Fresnel covering that both diffuses the light from, and protects, the flash tube, has become discolored. But I’m talking a 3-stop drop in light output. Anyway, after a couple of adjustments to my exposure settings, everything was working great again.
By the time 5 p.m. rolled around, it was clear that attendance had dropped off, and those still in attendance were off getting food or rest before the Cosplay Masquerade at 7.pm. So, I told my table assistant bad_phoenix_wolf that my plan was to leave at 6:30 to avoid any crowds that might be leaving once the show floor closed, also at 7 p.m. And big thanks for her for stepping up to be my last-minute replacement ride to RIAC. She is just getting into anime again, and there wasn’t much happening that interested her. That worked out for me, since she mostly stayed at the table helping out all day, but I always want my assistants to get out and enjoy the con during slower moments, if they want to. That said, her eye for identifying cool cosplay and willingness to call to them for photos was a big help.
Rhode Island Anime Con hasn’t announced the 2027 dates yet, not that I can find. But it has been on the first or second weekend in June for all three years, so I don’t see that changing for next year. I know that many friends of Nerd Caliber no longer attend its sister convention Rhode Island Comic Con because of the crowding, but if you are an anime fan that is looking for a convention somewhere in size between Another Anime Con and Anime Boston, in a facility that can handle three to four times the current crowd sizes, I can recommend Rhode Island Anime Con as one to check out.
