Fan Expo Boston 2026 Part 2
By early afternoon on Saturday at Fan Expo Boston 2026 it became clear that in addition to the benefit of having high foot traffic where I chose to set up my light and take cosplayer photos, there was a big downside.
Directly across from where I was siting was one of the large window bay spaces that are at every escalator bay on the top floor of the Thomas M. Menino Convention and Exhibition Center. This one was loaded up with a game space the convention called the “Friendiverse.” There was a table with a couple of game consoles and large cabinet-style controllers, a couple of tables with large Jenga towers, and an “axe” throwing space which used plushie hook-and-loop covered hammers and a large target with an inflatable protective cage around it.
But the largest space in the Friendizone was for a stage and seating set aside for interactive games, like the back-to-back Bingo games that took up hours of the afternoon. At full, amplified volume. Trying to shout over the speakers to tell cosplayers, “Next pose!” had my voice pretty shot by the end of the day. That said, every game was standing room only, so it seemed to be a big hit for the convention.
This gallery has a lopsided distribution of cosplayers that are known to unknown to me. The first roughly two-thirds is all cosplayers who happened to be walking by who I called out to for photos. Then the last third is almost all cosplayer friends, who seemed to all show up at the same time.
