Fan Expo Boston 2026 Part 3
As Saturday afternoon wound on at Fan Expo Boston 2026, the Bingo games just kept going. There were breaks in between games, which my ears and voice appreciated, but as you can see in the background of the last set of photos — taken about 6:15 p.m. — the seats were still full of Bingo players or game watchers.
Things did slow down enough that I could have good conversations with the many cosplay friends that showed up in the latter third of the day. And with photographer friend Kevin of kbrophystudio, who gave me a ride home once I had packed everything up. He tried to help me troubleshoot the flash problem I was having, but nothing either of us could think of worked.
So, about those large crowds … I don’t generally put a lot of stock in complaints on an unofficial social media forum, but the Fan Expo Boston Facebook group was loaded with post-con complaints about line management (or the lack thereof) for the most popular events. According to those posts, not only was the line management understaffed, but often different staffers were giving conflicting information about how and when to line up properly.
To be fair and balanced as one organization that never is puts it, I also saw posts and heard directly from friends during the con that they had no issues with lines for their celebrity table visits or celebrity photo ops.
All told, this was a pretty typical Fan Expo Boston — crowded to at least capacity for the roughly half of the MCEC it takes up. Everyone I talked to, whether they had a great time or a lousy one, wants the convention to expand into more of the convention center. To do so would obviously cost them more money, so I’m guessing Fan Expo is holding off until it is clear they are losing enough attendees due to overcrowding to justify the added expense.
Oh, and this year Fan Expo Boston did something baffling — it had Mel Gibson as a celebrity guest. Fuck that racist, abusive drunk.
Next year, apparently due to more construction happening at the MCEC, Fan Expo Boston will be held on the first weekend in December. While we don’t have any kind of contract that far out, that is probably going to be the weekend of PAX Unplugged 2027 in Philadelphia, and if things keep going well for us with PAX, we will be there and not in Boston.
