A Newbie’s Experience at Super MegaFest

This was my first time attending Super MegaFest the weekend before Thanksgiving. I had heard much about this show, ever since I got into the convention scene through mutual friends from the Massachusetts area.

Sadly I missed both the 2011 and 2012 shows, so you can imagine how excited I was to attend the 2013 convention after previously being unable to go. I am glad to say, not only was this convention everything I expected, but it went above and beyond.

Upon arrival at the Sheraton hotel, I was automatically in love with the venue. The hotel is beautiful, and the hotel rooms were probably among the biggest rooms I have seen out of all the cons I went to this year. Outside you got to see the vintage Batmobile from the TV Series starring Adam West, The General Lee from Dukes Of Hazard, the Delorean from Back to The Future, and the Ecto-1 from the Ghostbusters.

At first I was shocked to see that there were vendors or guest booths lined up in the main hallway which kind of made it hard to get through due to limited space and the people stopping for pics. But as you got passed the line you saw even more booth set ups, as well as vendors everywhere. Not to mention a giant Tardis for all you Doctor Who fans.

Downstairs held more space, and it was downstairs where the Costume Contest, and celebrity guests were all located. Downstairs was very spacious, so going through downstairs to get around the convention center, and hotel was less of an ordeal than using the crowded main hallway.

Being a small con it was really cool to see some of the celebrity guest roaming through the hallway saying hello, and hanging out with fans. I loved the fact I got to see Maria Kanellis and Kelly Kelly, two of my favorite female wrestlers, and also it blew my mind when I saw Manu Bennett strolling through the hallway — he was so cool, shaking everyone’s hands and stopping for pics. Also seeing Ernie Hudson with the Ghostbusters of New Hampshire  in front of the Ecto-1 has to be the moment of the con for me.

Going back to the Costume Contest, only at Super MegaFest have I ever seen a giant robot playing music and dancing along side fellow cosplayers and attendees. And speaking of cosplays, the cosplay was so diverse here. There could be a steampunk cosplay here, a Sailor Scout there, and it was no one specific genre of cosplay at this con. There were anime cosplayers, video game cosplayers, comic cosplayers, and sci-fi cosplayers.

I think the best part of the con for me was definitely the nighttime moments of the con. When ready to kick back and have fun there was a bar and restaurant right downstairs to grab some food. Getting to joke around and  have a few laughs with friends in the lobby was a blast, as were the awesome nighttime chill cosplays such as the Dynamite Brothers (Nicole Marie Jean and Destiny Nicklesen), and Wayne’s World’s Garth and Wayne (Bethany Maddock and Jen-Jen Noodle Bowl).

Seeing all my friends in the New England area made it so worth it for me. I never had a dull moment at the con. Though the con had a bit of an issue with the space, and crowd control, this didn’t hinder the con experience for me in any way.

Super MegaFest has to be one of the best social cons I have been to all year, and it was an amazing way to close out my 2013 convention year. I look forward to attending Super MegaFest 2014, to have another awesome time in the New England area.
