PAX East 2024 was an interesting mix, to say the least. With our usual base camp location closed off, the Nerd Caliber team relocated to the top floor. Not being set up next to the main entrance meant far fewer cosplayers walking directly past us. Fortunately, the word went out early and friends sent people our way, so we connected with a fair number of cosplayers. On the plus side, the third-floor location had the advantage of comfy seating and power outlets, plus a large open space with loads of natural light.

Overall, it seemed like there were fewer cosplayers than we’ve seen in previous years. Walking around on the show floor and through the halls, I saw only a handful of people in costumes. Once people knew where we were set up, we made great photos with many of our usual friends and quite a few cosplayers we hadn’t met before.

When Rodney had to opt out of Sunday, I set up in the same location solo. The third floor was a ghost town. After seeing literally zero cosplayers for over an hour, I packed up early and hit the show floor. The trend we commented on last year seems to be ongoing: more emphasis on indie games — video and especially tabletop — with many of the biggest software companies choosing not to attend. We hypothesized that the trend we’ve seen at PAX — fewer big videogame titles, smaller indie games — means fewer cosplayers, as so many cosplays at PAX have been based on in-game characters. The talent and craftsmanship from the cosplayers we saw more than made up for fewer cosplayers overall, as the photos in the gallery show.

Cosplayers in this gallery include: fallenbecks; MinktheSatyr; SteelShieldSundries; SisuCosplayandCraft; QueenofCoatsCosplay; Jithvan & Nero_the_Sable_gsd; Lastladyjane; and foxiimoxii.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
