‘FFVII’ HD Remake Looks Great, Raises Ire

In demand for decades, it is finally happening — the Final Fantasy VII HD Remake. Now this is huge for multiple reasons, mainly because the fans have been heard, and one of the best video games of all time is coming back for a new generation.

However people need to keep in mind that this is a remake. Not a revamp or remastered, a remake. Things will be changed, things will be different. So it is something to keep in mind when talking about this game.

After watching that teaser trailer released back in early December, I have to say I am excited. Midgar looks amazing. You can tell the graphics took a huge leap forward from previous FF titles like FFXIII and even FFXV. Also the characters received huge updates, like Barrett. He no longer looks like Mr. T, he looks more like a ’roided out Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and I love the new redesign. Even Cloud looks amazing in HD.

Honestly seeing them traverse the streets of Midgar was great, taking advantage of that next-gen open world exploration you see in games now. Also the biggest change I noticed was the different combat system. While I liked the old combat system I am open to this new one, with it having more of an action game feel than the active Time Battle System of the original.

Also, I’m not 100 percent sure but at one point it looked like you can play as Barrett instead of Cloud. Which would be really cool and can lead to some great puzzle elements that will require placing your teammates in certain areas to complete an objective. I’m not sure if that’s the case — it could just be for battles, but either way, I am looking forward to seeing more.

Now I will address the elephant in the room. The huge announcement was that the game will be episodic, and boy did that make people were mad. Truth be told I don’t mind. I mean the original game spanned multiple discs. So it’s not so crazy to believe it won’t be all on one disc. But they can split the game up this way, I can see episode 1 being just Midgar, ending up with you leaving Midgar.

However Square Enix does it, I don’t mind. I myself am sorta 50/50 on this. While I am excited to see a great game remade, I don’t have a dire or huge interest in playing. I’m not screaming “DAY 1 PURCHASE!” I’ll play it when I have time or with a couple of friends.

I first played FFVII in 11th grade, so I don’t have the same childhood connection many do. But I will say it’s an amazing game and story with great characters, moments that play with your emotions, and will live on in gaming history — even without the HD remake. Besides, I won’t judge it until I see more. Also, it can be as many episodes as it needs, as long as Tifa is still hot, the action is awesome, Sephiroth is still cool, and Aerith’s death scene is on fleek. As long as they don’t make DLC options to save her.
