Deadpool Retrospective Cosplay Gallery

Today is World Cancer Day, a United Nations observed day intended to increase awareness of efforts to reduce both sickness and death from cancer. It seems like an obvious choice to pick Deadpool for a retrospective gallery of cosplayers on such a day.

Deadpool, after all, not only suffers from cancer (as is the case in both the comics and the movie version), but in the comics he is constantly dying from new tumor growth and metastasization throughout his body. He is saved constantly by having a healing factor orders of magnitude more powerful than Wolverine’s that is able to stay ahead of the cancer. In the comics, it is this healing factor that has driven Deadpool insane. Even the neurons in his brain are constantly being stricken with cancer and refreshed, making it impossible for him to have any real mental stability.

While that seems like a very serious take on Deadpool affliction, there is no doubt he is a very unserious character. So let me make it clear that I am not being flippant about how serious cancer is by making this post. Both of my parents died from cancer, almost 45 years apart. For that reason the bulk of my charitable contributions have gone toward cancer-related causes. I have directly observed the terrible effects of cancer on someone who cannot ultimately fight it off, and personally know the effects of it on those left behind.

So, yes, Deadpool is the wisecracking, fourth wall-breaking “Merc with a Mouth,” but he also embodies the pain and damage cancer causes. Humor is one of the most popular coping mechanisms, after all.

One of the thrills of photographing Deadpool cosplayers is seeing the wide variety of costume designs they can choose from that the character has worn over the years, as well as the hilariously creative mashups. Prof. SteinPool, Disco StuPool, ArielPool and more are all wonderful but I think my two favorites are GalactusPool and Bea ArthurPool.

Among the cosplayers in the massive gallery are Boston’s Deadpool, sarahspectre, Tallest Silver, krymetariver, BelleChere, quinnjob, larayiahuntercosplay, New Hampshire captain killian jones hook cosplay, Deadpool’s Island, ThatTomCatt, robin_winter26, Thatch Cosplay, chantelantoinette, jenjenelise, spectra_v3, Rangerpool Cosplay, and many, many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
