Farewell, PopCult Anime Con – Cosplay Gallery Part 2
Saturday afternoon started with a tasty ham and cheese sandwich from the staff lunchroom, access to which was a perk of my agreement to photograph cosplayers for PopCult Anime Con. Across the Eden Vale lounge, which was the open staging area in front of the Eden Vale ballroom, the Lip Sync Battle was going on in that ballroom, and I could hear the songs — lots of Britney Spears for some reason. In between bites of the sandwich and head bopping, I stayed busy taking photos of the cosplayers at the final iteration of the convention.
A bit before the Lip Sync Battle ended at 2 p.m., I saw some unfortunate excitement. A pair of police officers along with convention and hotel security went into the ballroom and escorted a pair of cosplayers out into the lounge, Based on the long, intense but ultimately non-confrontational discussions going on I had a guess as to what was happening and someone who was also watching it play out — not a staffer, but who will remain unnamed — knew the two people escorted out and confirmed my theory that it was most likely a restraining order issue. It looked like it was resolved peacefully — I got busy taking photos and when I next looked everyone was gone.
One benefit to my studio location was that it was directly across from Registration, so I had a constant stream of cosplayers going past me in both directions. If I missed them going into the Registration room, I could usually catch them coming back out. While this flow was busiest in the morning, it kept going until late — one attendee even managed to get in after they had shut the doors but before they had shut down the ticketing system, after the Masquerade started at 8 p.m.
