Granite State Comic Con 2025 Saturday Gallery Part 1
After last year’s record-setting attendance numbers for Granite State Comicon, it was a pleasure that this year turned out to be just normally well attended. Not that crowds were a problem for me this year, since I wasn’t set up in the Exhibit Hall but was in a panel room connected to a part of the ballroom used for the Costume Contest and other big events. That panel room was used for cosplay repair, the costume contest signup and judging, and my studio.
OK, sort of my studio. I only had to set up my lights, since the photo staffers for GraniteCon has set up a backdrop already, one they would be using to take photos of the costume contestants. Since the room was already pretty packed, I accepted the offer to use the backdrop until they needed it at 4 p.m. It was shorter and narrower than my usual backdrop stand, so some of the photos in these Saturday galleries are more tightly framed and cropped than most of my shots. In some cases, even that wasn’t possible, and you can see the costume sticking up above the top of backdrop.
Because of that 4 p.m. cut-off and the remote location of the room, I didn’t take as many photos on Saturday as I usually do. I managed to get more contestants than typical, seeing as they were all right next to me for at times more than an hour waiting for their judging, but I got none of the walk-by cosplayers I could call out to for photos. That means I have two galleries of more than 100 photos this year, instead of my more typical three galleries of between 80 and 90.
Even with the crowded nature of the room, we had enough space for our video team to set up next to the studio space and got a bunch of great cosplayers interviews. Check those out on our YouTube channel in the next few weeks.
One of the cool benefits of being in that room was that it was used as the pass through to get backstage at the main stage next door. So just before 11 a.m. I had a short break between taking photos and David Yost and Walter Jones — the Blue Ranger and the Black Ranger from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers — walked right past me and just hung out for a few minutes waiting for their big panel. And while there was some murmuring in the room, nobody bothered them for an autograph or anything. Everybody — or at least everyone who recognized them — was pretty chill about it.
