PAX East 2023 Sunday Cosplay Gallery By Samie Wong Photos
This final gallery by Samie of samiewongphotos from PAX East 2023 has photos taken almost exclusively on the exhibit hall show floor. Even more so than in the last gallery, these photos give you a sense of just how open the show floor was this year. We’ve mentioned it already, but the pandemic accelerated the already existing tendency for AAA game studios or publishers to stop attending conventions in favor of doing their own online presentations.
The game and game-related companies that have filled in those gaping holes at recent conventions just aren’t wealthy enough to take up the massive booth spaces that companies like Microsoft or Sony have in the past years. While the more open show floor is great for photographers, and people with crowd avoidance concerns, it is also indicative of the one thing that most fans of the last two PAX East events are unhappy about — the lack of big game company presence.
PAX East and all game-focused conventions and events are in a state of flux. I hope that they (and PAX East in particular) come out of it strong and stable, with whatever mix of exhibitors, vendors and guests that works best. I do worry, however, that the future may be more bleak.
