Pink Cosplay Retrospective On National Pink Day
What is National Pink Day? That’s tough to say. It’s easier to say what it isn’t — it is not an actual National Holiday or any other kind of recognized day at the U.S. federal level. Its origin is a mystery, with no information available about when it was started or who did so. But it seems as though it has been observed in some fashion for many years. It has always been held on June 23, and often associated with Breast Cancer Awareness, even though the actual Breast Cancer Awareness month is October.
Just because it is a mysterious day of recognition doesn’t mean I won’t use it as an excuse to pull together a very large gallery of cosplayers in predominantly pink costumes.
Defining “pink” is rather challenging as it turns out. When does neon pink become magenta? How much orange is allowed before salmon becomes something no longer pink? So, my guidelines became “it has to be clearly pink, not magenta or some other color, and it has to be at least 50 percent pink.” However, by the time I was halfway through looking over 2018 galleries, I already had more than 175 images. I then decided to only limit the gallery to solo shots, or duos in which both cosplayers are in mainly pink costumes, and by the time I was through 2023 so far, the gallery had more then 200 images in it. So, all the shots with more than one person were out, and I got even more selective with what I defined as pink.
