Wicked Comic Con 2023 Sunday Gallery By FirstPerson Shooter, Part 2
Just like the vendors, guests and exhibitors started wrapping up by mid-afternoon on Sunday at Wicked Comic Con 2023, I’ll wrap up our coverage of the second annual event.
Almost everyone I talked to at the event liked most things about the new location at the Hynes Convention Center. The only complaints I heard were about access. Some of the vendors didn’t care for the loading area and parking restrictions for things like trailers, and many of the attendees mentioned how much more expensive parking was than last year when the convention was at the Westin Waterfront in South Boston.
Funny aside — one person who really enjoyed the new location was Ani-Mia. Her only visit to Boston prior to Wicked Comic Con was more than a decade ago when she went to PAX East in its first year at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in South Boston. So her only exposure to what Boston looked like was the trip from the airport to the almost empty industrial Seaport part of Southie — not a beautiful ride. This year, when her ride took her along Storrow Drive, past Boston Common and down Commonwealth Ave., she was amazed at how beautiful Boston is. I told her she wouldn’t recognize the Seaport area now, with all the development since she was last in town.
If Mia comes back for the convention in 2024, she will get her chance. Wicked Comic Con announced that next year it will be moving from late April to late June, and back to the Westin Waterfront. I reached out to con management for an official statement as to why the move, but I haven’t heard back yet. There is no statement from con management about it in the comments of their announcements on either Twitter or Facebook. But I think that it’s pretty clear that one reason is to make vendors and attendees happy, providing easier access, easier loading and cheaper parking.
