Nintendo’s Bombshell: FF7’s Cloud Joins Smash Bros

Hey did you ever think you would see the Guardian of the Lifestream and Final Fantasy main character Cloud Strife go up against Mario? No, neither did I, but that is going to happen.

During the Nintendo Direct event yesterday, Cloud Strife was announced for Super Smash Bros 4. This came as a huge shock to many. I never imagined I would see Cloud in a Super Smash Bros game. And I know the polls for character voting for new DLC closed a month ago. But from the look of Cloud, he has been worked on for some time now. He looks like a fully finished character. You can see the attention to detail in his moves, from his mobility, taunts, stance, and attacks. It is amazing to see him in a smash game, and he looks amazing. His special moves are his famous limit breaks like the blade beam, Cross Slash, Climhazzard, and of course his final smash, The Omnislash — which I might add was amazing seeing him perform on Ike who was supposed to be Sephiroth.

In addition, a new stage, Midgard from FF7, was shown off. As you fight on a platform, in the background the summons from the game can be seen causing damage to the stage. That leads to all sorts of chaos happening, like the stage being cut in half, a giant beam hitting the stage causing massive damage to those caught in the cross fire, flames rising in one part of the level, and much more not shown. This stage is going to be chaotic, that is for sure.

It’s possibly one of the best video game announcements since E3, and speaking of which, to me this makes up for their poor showcase during the summer. We should hear more information regarding Smash 4 in December, so until then we play the waiting game. Final Fantasy 7 fans as well as fans of videogames in general rejoice. This will be the only game where we can see Mario, Sonic, Pac Man, Megaman, Ryu, and now Cloud fight it out.
