Deku feature set by Cosplays by Fenpai from PortConMaine 2019
As soon as we were done with our Friday panel at PortConMaine 2019, “How to Build a Nerdy YouTube Channel,” I made a beeline for my usual shooting location. I wasn’t there for more than 30 minutes before I saw an adorable genderbent Deku cosplay. After grabbing a few hall shots, I found her to be quite chatty, and looking for someone to take some more featured set-style shots. I hadn’t shot a set since our photoshoot week on Cape Cod in May, and it was still early in the convention so I said sure.
As it turns out, Fen, online as Cosplays by Fenpai and merchantqueen_, is from Florida, and not only a talented cosplayer, but an experienced martial artist. Experienced enough that she can throw sidekicks while wearing at least 6-inch heels and standing on a mound of mulch. We had a lot of fun chatting about different martial arts styles and cosplay.
Right after the shoot, Manny did a video interview, and you can hear how much planning and effort went into making the Deku catsuit-like costume. That video is below the image that links to the gallery.
We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
