TooManyGames returned to The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA on June 21-23 this year, for its 16th event, which was its 9th show at the Oaks venue. The long-running gaming convention has been steadily growing since its inception, and held its most highly attended show to date this year, bringing in 15,000 attendees over the course of its three-day event.

As you might expect with a name like TooManyGames, video gaming is at the forefront of the convention. The arcade area of the convention was particularly impressive, featuring a large array of classic arcade style cabinets.

Gamers looking for some fighting game competition could duke it out on head-to-head style cabinets which included such titles as Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Fans of retro games looking for a classic single-player experience could enjoy games such as Ms. Pac-Man, Tetris, Centipede, and Dig Dug. Gamers looking to get their groove on could find a selection of dance and rhythm style games including Neon FM, Pump It Up Prime 2, and Dance Dance Revolution Extreme.

Gaming on modern consoles was of course available as well, with a large area dedicated to console freeplay and casual tournaments. Titles including Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, and Mortal Kombat 11 were just a few of the games ready to play in this area.

TooManyGames also had an area dedicated to retro computers and consoles, which was a unique experience that I have not seen at any convention that I have previously attended. These computers and consoles were not simply set up as a display of gaming history; they were actually all functional and set up to be played by attendees. Ever want to play Donkey Kong on a Commodore VIC-20? TooManyGames has got you covered. The Atari 800, Texas Instruments TI-99/4A, and 128K Tandy Color Computer 3 (yeah, computers of that era didn’t have the catchiest names) were just a few of the many old-timey computers and consoles that could be found in this part of the show floor.

Musical entertainment is a staple of almost any convention, and TooManyGames featured a dedicated concert hall area for just that. Musical groups performing at the show included Stereotytans, Professor Shyguy, Steel Samurai, and Lame Genie.

Celebrity guests are a big draw for many multi-genre conventions. Instead of bringing in movie and television stars, TooManyGames’ guest list had a focus on YouTubers and other internet personalities. The Angry Video Game Nerd, The Runaway Guys, SomecallmeJohnny, boogie2988, and Shesez were all on hand to meet and greet fans at the convention. Many of these guests also held panels throughout the convention which gave attendees another way to interact with some of their favorite YouTubers in an “IRL” setting.

Some of the other attractions, activities, and events held over the course of the three-day convention included Cosplay Pro Wrestling, a cosplay contest hosted by Retro Con, and numerous panels covering a variety of different topics.

TooManyGames will return to The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center on June 26-28, 2020.
