Houston To Get Its Own PAX Unplugged In 2027

After eight years in Philadelphia, the tabletop and card game-focused convention PAX Unplugged is getting a new sibling, PAX Unplugged Houston.

The news was sent out via the ReedPop public relations firm earlier today, after the “storytime keynote” by Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games, at PAX West, happening this weekend in Seattle. Penny Arcade founded the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) conventions and ReedPop is the co-organizer of all the shows, including Boston’s own PAX East.

According to the press release, the new PAX Unplugged Houston will run June 25-27, 2027, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. That puts it seven months after PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, about on the opposite side of the year. As an aside, it seems odd to have the one in Texas in the summer and the one in Philly in the late fall.

Jerry Holkins, co-founder of PAX, Penny Arcade, and Child’s Play Charity along with Mike Krahulik, said in the press release, “Whenever we get done with PAX Unplugged out in Philly, I just want to rewind time and do it all again. This is the next best thing. And it’ll be great to see our old friends from down that way.”

The new convention marks a return to Texas for PAX. In 2015 as part of a large expansion effort the company launched PAX South in San Antonio, Texas. That convention ran until 2020 when it was closed down. PAX Unplugged Houston brings the number of PAX events up to five, with the original event in Seattle, now called PAX West, PAX East, PAX Aus in Melbourne, Australia, and the other PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia.
