Game Bites: More Lawsuits And An Old Game Auction Record

Welcome back, all you Nerd Caliber fans, to another week of gaming news and events. This week was full of lawsuits, new information on the Blizzard scandal and more.

CD Projekt Red and Sony both could be facing lawsuits soon but for different reasons. CD Projekt Red, the creators of Cyberpunk 2077 are once again under fire for their most recent game. It seems that now their own investors are filing a second class action suit which claims that CD Projekt Red lied about the performance of Cyberpunk 2077. The new suit has been filed in California, while the first suit was filed in New York in Dec. 2020. Sony on the other hand is looking at a possible class-action lawsuit from consumers claiming it’s operating a monopoly by only allowing digital PlayStation games to be purchased through the official PlayStation Store, a move the company made at the beginning of April. This comes after Sony had prevented other retailers like Amazon and Gamestop from selling download codes on their sites. Sony has yet to say anything on the matter.

Activision Blizzard were once again in the news following their lawsuit from the State of California. Last week the head of human resources, Jesse Meschuk, became the second executive to leave the company. There has been no word on if this is Blizzard’s way of trying to fix its internal issues or not, and even if that is what Blizzard is trying to do, it has yet to be seen if any of these executives leaving will fix the turmoil in the company.

One of the strangest pieces of news this week was the sale at auction of a rare Super Mario Bros. unopened game. The copy of the game was sealed and rated a 9.8 on the Wata scale which is an almost perfect score, which is undoubtedly a big part of why it sold for $2 million on auction. The game was purchased by an anonymous buyer and it’s made many fans want to search their own game libraries to see what they could get for their classics.

Ariana Grande performed a concert in Fortnite this past weekend. This isn’t the first time Ariana Grande has had herself appear in video games. She has also been a special unlockable character in the mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. She isn’t the first singer that Fortnite has put into the game either, since they’ve done collaborations with other artists such as Travis Scott and Marshmello.

This week was very light on video game releases. On the third of August we had Lemnis Gate (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC) and The Ramp (PC). On Aug 4 we had Dungeon Defenders: Awakened (Switch); and lastly The Falconeer (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch) on Aug. 5.
