Boston Comic Con launched in 2007 as a one-day creator-focused convention. It grew steadily over the years and became nationally famous as the convention that had to be postponed and move locations because of the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013. From that year until 2016, Boston Comic Con was held at the Seaport World Trade Center in South Boston. Immediately after that year’s convention, executives announced that Fan Expo had purchased the convention, which was renamed for 2014 as Fan Expo Boston.

Moving a couple hundred yards south to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), Fan Expo Boston has kept the convention running since then, with the obvious break in 2020 because of the pandemic. Now, six years after the sale of Boston Comic Con, the original founders are back with a new event, Wicked Comic Con — a one-day, creator-focused event that was held this past Saturday, April 9.

The new convention returned to its home when I first attended Boston Comic Con in 2012, the Westin Waterfront hotel, in South Boston. The hotel is experienced with nerd conventions, being the home for many years of Arisia, and the primary hotel for PAX East, held in the attached BCEC since its second year. As a new convention running for just one day and with no movie or TV celebrity guests, I assumed the convention would have a moderate number of attendees — particularly as it was one of the first local conventions since the Omicron wave at the end of 2021. But boy was I wrong.

The main hallway that all of the cosplay guests and fan groups were in was often too crowded to easily navigate — and it is a very wide hallway, even with tables on either side. We had a spot at the very end, and while I was at first upset that there was a large credenza that was too heavy for the hotel to move easily, preventing me from setting up a backdrop, I eventually realized it could be used as a prop. I recommend, among the many other glamour-style poses, that of the Snake cosplay from Metal Gear Solid.

For a brand-new one-day convention, I took 230 useable photos, enough for two very large galleries. That is an unusually high number. And I wasn’t the only one having a busy day — when I had a chance to do a loop around the Artist Alley and Dealer’s Room spaces to say hello to artist friends, they all said they were having a bang-up day.

Next year, Wicked Comic Con will expand to two days and move to the John B. Hynes Convention Center. I look forward to seeing how the convention grows from its very successful start.
